SIKLIGAR HOUSING PROJECT

REHABILITATION OF SIKLIGAR SIKHS

Sikligar Sikh Families

This long over due work to improve the living conditions of hard working poor sikligar sikhs who have been earning their living by producing various implements of everyday use out of steel metal scratch and sell them themselves by roaming the streets of towns and villages , was started by Nishkam in collaboration with Karnataka Sikh Welfare Society, Bangalore in the year 2000. These sikligar Sikhs are spread sparsely almost in all states of India. An
overwhelming majority till this day live in shanties and are illiterate. They prefer making their children learn the skill of their ancestors rather than sending them to schools. The reason of their poverty, generation after generation is the result of their illiteracy. 22 such families of Sikligar Sikhs had been living in Akkiappa Garden colony in Bangalore for 40 years when a group of volunteers of KSWS visited them first time in 2000. Though impressed by their skill and hard work, they felt miserable noticing their living conditions in most unhygienic environment. Pucca houses were built for these 22 sikligar Sikh families and one house for a Tamil family. Around 20 children of sikligar Sikh families were got admitted in schools and their education needs are being met.

In 2006-07 school session, 371 children of sikligar Sikh families from 25 villages in and around 15 towns of Karnatka are attending schools. Nishkam in co-ordination with KSWS is to a great extent meeting the educational needs of these school-going children. Teachers have been engaged and are being engaged to provide off school-hour tuitions to these school-going children of sikligar Sikh families to help them perform well at their schools and examinations. In Bangalore, solid houses were constructed for them by Nishkam from its funds. However, at other places it is trying to get them allotted solid houses constructed by govt.-agencies for families below poverty line under two different schemes. To achieve this objective Nishkam has so far deposited required down-payments (ranging from Rs5100/- to Rs10,000/-per family) on behalf of 79 families and 50 of them are likely to get the newly constructed houses allotted to them by middle of 2007. Nishkam’s long-term strategy to bring them above poverty line is to give maximum possible education to their children. A missionary was engaged by Nishkam two years back to provide religious and moral education to the members of Sikligar Sikh families to bring them closer to mainstream of Sikh community. The results of this effort are very encouraging judging from the performance of their children at various Gurdwaras on important occasions.

EXTENSION OF THIS PROGRAM TO RAJASTHAN

Nishkam has extended this program of rehabilitation of sikligar Sikh families to Udaipur in Rajasthan in collaboration with All India Sikh Welfare Society, Udaipur. While this welfare society is engaged in providing education to the children of these families apart from providing clean drinking water etc., Nishkam is in the process of constructing solid houses for 33 families. 23 out of 33 houses are expected to be completed by end of March,07 and handed over for occupation to the families concerned. The construction of remaining houses will be taken up thereafter after the jhuggies (slum houses) are removed where remaining houses need to be constructed.
