SIKLIGAR EDUCATION PROJECT

In States of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pardesh and Rajasthan etc. many individuals called Sikligars, Vanjaras and Lobanas have been residing in huts-their living conditions have been dismal.  They became Sikhs at the times of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji but have been deprived of education for hundreds of years.  These individuals severely lack opportunities; they, however, are hardworking and industrious.  They are a proud people who live with dignity.  They have been struggling to discover their religious roots, from which they have been distanced with the passage of time.

Sikligarh Sikh Children

After formation of the Nishkam Wing in August, 2000 in Karnataka Sikh Welfare Society the first effort was to enroll twenty-two children with ages 6 to 12 in a government school for education. Six younger children were admitted to a school for basic education. As a result of vigorous effort by Nishkam Sewadars the number of school going children. In 2006-07 school session, 371 children of sikligar Sikh families from 25 basties in and around 15 towns of Karnatka are attending schools Nishkam in. co-ordination with KSWS is to a great extent meeting

the educational needs of these school-going children (school dresses, shoes, books, copies, bags etc.). Teachers have been engaged and are being engaged to provide off school-hour tuitions to these school-going children of sikligar Sikh families to help them perform well at their schools and examinations. A missionary was engaged by Nishkam two years back to provide religious and moral education to the members of Sikligar Sikh families to bring them closer to mainstream of Sikh community. The results of this effort are very encouraging judging from the performance of their children at various Gurdwaras on important occasions.

The children of Sikligar Sikh Families are now going to schools, and besides learning local Kannada language are learning Gurmukhi, Gurbani, Gur-itihas, Sikh History and Kirtan. It is expected that these measures over a long period of time will finally help to bring these families in the mainstream and out of poverty.
